What is a Slot?

A slot is a narrow depression, notch, or opening, especially one for receiving something, as a coin or a letter. It may also refer to a position or sequence of time: the 2 p.m. slot on the broadcasting schedule. a position within a hierarchy or system: the slot for chief copy editor.

A slit or hole in something, used for a key or other fastener, or for an electric or telecommunication line. Also, a passage in an enclosure: the slot for the smoke detector. A slit or hole for receiving or admitting something, such as a coin in a vending machine.
